How Clean Energy Charging Works

When you connect your iPhone to a charger, Clean Energy Charging analyzes the carbon-emission forecast for your area and adjusts its charging schedule accordingly. By leveraging data on energy production and consumption, your device can prioritize charging during off-peak hours, thereby reducing its carbon footprint.

To ensure the effectiveness of Clean Energy Charging, certain location settings must be enabled on your device to collect the data necessary to determine the carbon-emission forecast for your area. Clean Energy Charging works in tandem with Optimized Battery Charging to learn your charging habits and optimize energy consumption patterns. It prioritizes charging during periods when you spend the most time in familiar locations, such as your home or workplace, and charge your iPhone for extended durations.

If renewable sources of power are unavailable, charging will stop and resume once the clean electricity is available again. Don’t have time to wait? You can override the setting if you need a quick power boost — the feature has a “Charge Now” option to resume charging immediately..

Apple’s innovative new feature is a significant step towards integrating renewable energy into our daily lives. By aligning charging schedules with periods of high renewable energy production, Clean Energy Charging not only minimizes environmental impact but also promotes the adoption of renewable energy sources in the energy grid.

Inconveniently Sustainable?

However, the new feature is not without some flaws — ever unplugged your iPhone and instead of seeing a fully-charged battery bar, are greeting with the message that your phone is “scheduled to finish charging” sometime later?

The dynamic charging feature was met with blowback after its release — with the release of iOS 16.1, Clean Energy Charging is enabled by default for iPhone users. It was minimally publicized, and initially left many users with the inconvenient surprise of a partially-charged device. While this may not be as much of an issue for those who work from home or keep a charger at their desk throughout the day, this somewhat-secret feature is inconvenient for many who are understandably expecting a fully-charged device and are shocked by unexpectedly sluggish charging times.

According to Apple, users do have the option to disable the feature by navigating to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging, although the company notes that the “default activation encourages widespread adoption and participation.” Additionally, this feature is currently only available in the U.S. — so foreign markets don’t yet have the capacity to power their smartphones via renewable energy.
